German automaker BMW is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to defective airbag inflators that may explode upon deployment , as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) . The affected models include certain BMW 3 Series Sedans and Sportwagon vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2012 . The recall comes after investigations revealed that the Takata PSDI-5 airbag inflators installed in the vehicles could rupture after prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity.
The faulty airbag inflators were manufactured by the Japanese automotive parts supplier Takata , which filed for bankruptcy in 2017 following a series of recalls . Over the past decade , more than 100 million vehicles worldwide equipped with Takata airbag inflators have been recalled due to safety concerns . The inflators have been linked to over 30 deaths , with at least 26 fatalities reported in the U.S. alone . The recall issued by BMW also includes a " do not drive " warning for 90,000 older model vehicles with Takata airbags , urging owners to take precautionary measures.
Regulators express concerns that some of the affected vehicles may have been modified by owners to include aftermarket steering wheels that utilize Takata airbags . The inflators in these airbags can experience excessive internal pressure during deployment , leading to ruptures and the ejection of metal fragments . Despite the recall efforts by various auto manufacturers , millions of vehicles are still equipped with Takata airbags , posing safety risks to drivers and occupants . The Center for Auto Safety highlights the urgency of addressing these issues to prevent future tragedies on the road.
BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the airbag inflator issue in the U.S. Dealers will be notified of the recall and will reach out to owners to schedule repairs . The NHTSA emphasizes the importance of addressing the safety concerns promptly to avoid potential risks associated with the defective airbag inflators . As the automotive industry continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Takata airbag recalls , it remains crucial for manufacturers and regulators to prioritize safety and preventive measures to protect consumers on the road.
